This – at the time – most expensive Disney Movie is just simply a brilliant piece of Art.
Do you have any idea how difficult it is to produce a movie that is as thrilling to kids as to grown ups?
It is probably John Barry’s, OST composer, most important work that influences film music & artists until this very day.
The cast is priceless.
The special effects are well done considering the small film crew and the technical limitations of the time.
To compare this movie to Star Wars is narrow minded and totally senseless – but what do you expect from a senseless revies like the one above?
Do not expect anything from a movie.
watch it and think about what it ‘creates’ in you.
You will not be disappointed.

Seeing the post about how Lucifer (satan) was described as a beautiful angel before the fall made me think of LOTR. Originally Sauron was a beautiful, angel-like entity before his “fall” as well.

Why do I bring this up? Well I also find the whole “I love Narnia and LOTR but I hate Harry Potter” hypocritical and tiring at best. The thing is that all of the above stories have magic, all have witches or wizards, all have good and evil magic, All have a Christ-like character who ‘dies’ for a cause (Aslan in Narnia, Gandalf in LOTR and according to how you view the story, Harry’s mother lays down her life for her child (Christ figure! Hello?!) or you could say Harry himself is a Christ figure having had a killing curse placed on him and coming out of it and defeating death).

The fact is that there is Christian symbolism in all three books and yes, there is more probably in Narnia. There is some discussion now whether he meant to or not. I have always heard it was a direct Christian allegory (and having read it how can you not see the symbolism?) but if he didnt I’m sure his own beliefs and faith formed a lot of how he created the story. Either way, you can find both secular and religious themes in all three. I’m getting pretty sick and tired of everyone getting hung up on the fact that Rowling uses the word witchcraft in her description of Hogwarts. But, hey, let’s be honest, there’s more overt magic going on in LOTR, Gandalf and Sauruman are referred to as wizards, and Sauron controls many of his minions through dark magic, there is also the WITCH KING who is evil, and the elves exhibit healing magic within the story.

The ones who want to ban HP need to take a step back and think long and hard about their double standards and what they are really fighting against. You cant love one thing and hate another when they are so similar in theme.

Office Space is one of my all time favorite movies! Yes, I work in an office with cubicles, weird co-workers, and TPS reports…the whole shebang. Interestingly enough my son, who watched the movie the first time with me when he was about 17, thought it was hilarious. Anytime I get really fed up with my job, and have a “case of the Monday’s”, I think of quotes from the movie and then I don’t have to slit my wrists!

I read somewhere that the folks at Pixar are heavily influenced by Hayao Miyazaki. They all not only pay attention to detail and create beautiful scenery, they also all have very strong storylines. I watched Spirited Away because it was one of the top movies at Netflix while I was searching for anime. It’s definitely a great movie.

Excellent, am also looking forward to your reviews. We’ve seen them all except for Lupin III, and my wife and I also prefer the Japanese language track with subtitles—which of course means they need to be watched multiple times so that you can give the artwork more time to sink in. Our favorites are Nausicaa and Kiki’s, but were disappointed with Howl’s.

Amateurish- they may have been characters in a comic book, but many of them had more substance than some movie characters, IMO. And yeah, I didn’t recognize Elijah either for a moment. I was like, “Creepy- waitaminute, that’s Frodo!”

Damon- Um, not quite. Consider that because this was based on a graphic novel, we often heard what one solidary character was thinking, so there was a lot of narration.

Conversely, one of Tarantino’s signature styles is to have characters banter with each other, usually in a very casual and comical manner. Usually the characters talk about nonsense topics (e.g. the “Madonna” conversation at tthe beginning of Reservoir Dogs), but sometimes they talk about relevant stuff (e.g. Jules complaining to Vincent about having to clean the bloody car in Pulp Fiction). It’s always funny though.

Can you recall a scene when two characters are talking back and forth, and the scene is somewhat comical? It’s between two guys

I’m so glad you’re doing this! I’ve seen both Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away in the last six months and loved both, and I’ve been meaning to look into Miyazaki’s other films. I loved Spirited Away the most; I can’t put my finger on why, but it really resonated with me in a way that Princess Mononoke didn’t. Looking forward to the reviews!

What I loved about the movie was, as you said, their ability to be true to the comic. I read the comic first and loved how the plots intertwined, right down to where cetain cahracters are sitting in the bar while another subplot is ocurring. I was surprised with the actors abilities to let the cahracters overshadow them. Perhapd it’s because the character were just that. Characters from a comic book…caricatures if you will… I was pleasantly surprised by Jessica alba as I am not usually a fan of her work. I almost didn’t recognize Eljah Wood for a moment. A rare movie that stayed true to it’s inspiration…without pandering.

I agree with the poster Marvo. It’s so simple, yet brilliant. He looks like an overgrown Boy Scout, with the aura behind him like that.

In the past year I haven’t really seen many movies in the theater, maybe something like four. The reason why is because there were/are many crappy movies out there. However, the 40-Year Old Virgin was one of those four because I’ve been a big fan of Steve Carell since his days on The Daily Show. Also, how could someone not want to watch a movie with a promotional poster like the one you have above. I REALLY loved this movie and I will definitely be buying it to add to my very small DVD collection, which also includes the recently Reel Review-ed, Office Space.

I just looked it up on IMDB. When you mentioned Guy Ritchie, I thought it was going to be another one of those “Lock, Stock and…” (along with “Snatch”) movies that all seem to have the same plot.

Layer Cake looks like it has a relatively good rating, but I didn’t want to read further for fear of spoilers.

Steve- Well, when this scene came on the screen cracked in the middle and the TV let out an ear piercing sound, like a shriek of agony. I think we accidentally killed it. We had to go back to Fry’s and exchange it for a new one

J- That’s exactly the same reason why my boyfriend rented it. He saw this movie many, many years ago and remembered it to be very funny, but when he watched it again it strangely wasn’t as funny as it used to be. Maybe it just didn’t stand the test of time. Perhaps it’s funnier when one has had a few to drink. But I just thought it was painful to watch. Sorry
